Certain pockets of the NHS are now recommending these treatments as a fast and effective way to help reduce stress and tension. The movements used have a stimulating and soothing effect on the nerve endings, inducing relaxation.
Everybody is living at such a fast pace of life and multi-tasking, that the adrenal glands are being over worked, leading to the symptoms of stress and fatigue. The initial encounter with a stessor is known as the alarm phase. In response to touch, sight, hearing, smell and taste the body initiates the release of the hormone adrenalin into the bloodstream. This is sometimes referred to as an 'adrenalin rush' and is responsible for the following physiological responses:
- Increased blood flow to the brain to improve mental activity.
- Increased levels of breathing to improve oxygen intake.
- Conversion of glycogen (carbohydrate) in the liver for additional energy production.
- Reduced blood flow to the digestive and urinary organs slowly down
- Digestion and the release of waste from the body.
- Increased sweating to reduce temperature.
- Dilation of the pupil to increase vision.
- Loss of concentration
- Muscle fatigue
- Indigestion
- Loss of energy
- Headaches
- Eyestrain
- Aches and pains in joints and muscles
- Urinary problems e.g. cystitis
- Common cold and/or associated symptoms e.g. sore throat, coughs etc.
- Anxiety
In turn, the body reaches the final burnt out stage known as the exhaustion stage. This results in a further weakening of the organs and body systems responsible for coping with stressful situations, reducing the natural defences and leaving the body vulnerable and at risk. More long lasting and severe conditions occur such as:
- Migraine
- High blood pressure
- Repetitive strain injury
- Irritable bowel syndrome
- Depression
- Skin disorders e.g., eczema.
